I’m always on the look out for new protein powders to try out, as they’re something that I can be quite choosy over and there are certain qualities that I tend to look out for. I’ve recently taken the plunge and treated myself to a new pea protein by a brand called Vital Health- I purchased the chocolate flavour. This is a natural, vegan protein with no artificial sweeteners added. I decided to give this one a go after hearing positive feedback from a friend and so far, I’m pretty impressed! Like when I purchase most new things, I couldn’t wait to experiment with this in my recipes and thought a protein smoothie would be an excellent place to begin. This smoothie is slightly different from my usual creations, as there are in fact no bananas used! I know, this is probably a little surprising, seeing as bananas have practically become a staple ingredient in most smoothies however, I like to mix things up and so wanted to try something a little different this time.
Pears make an amazing banana alternative in smoothies as they have a divine delicately sweet flavour, that isn’t too overpowering against other flavours you might like to add. Oh and pears and chocolate.. well that’s just a winning combination, am I right? This smoothie instantly became on of my new favourite things; it’s sweet, a good source of protein, healthy fats and carbs.. and tastes like a chocolate milkshake!
Nourishing and refuelling your body before and after a workout is so important, in order to insure that you can keep performing at your best and achieve great results. For my post workout snack/meal, I always try and make sure that I’m getting in some good carbs and a source of protein to help my muscles recover and this smoothie is on of my rather tasty ways of doing just that. This would also make for a great breakfast option on the go, as you could whizz it up the night before and store it in the fridge ready for that morning rush before work. Like I always say, what you put into your body has a dramatic effect on your energy levels and the way you feel; I always find that having a good and balanced breakfast helps to set me up for eating well throughout the day.
1 ripe pear
1 tsp cacao powder
1/2 tsp vanilla powder
1 heaped tsp cashew butter
1 tbsp chocolate protein powder (I use this one)
Generous plug of almond milk (taylor this to how thick you would like your smoothie)
Ice cubes (optional)
Place all of the ingredients into your blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
